Project description
I want to commission a genuinely handmade leather belt, something I can wear every day for years and eventually pass down. I have been buying mass-produced belts my whole life and they all crack, stretch out, or fall apart within a year or two, so this time I would like to invest in a piece built the old way: full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, hand-stitched with saddle stitch rather than machine sewn, and finished by someone who actually cares about the details.
Here is what I am picturing. The strap should be about 1.5 inches wide, dark brown or chestnut in color (open to your recommendation on the exact tannage and dye), with a beveled and burnished edge. I would like my initials, three letters, embossed or hand-tooled near the tip of the strap in a simple serif style, nothing flashy or overly decorative. The buckle should be solid brass or nickel, ideally something you either forge yourself or source from a small supplier, and it needs to attach in a way that lets me swap it out later if I ever want a different buckle.
I do not have exact measurements yet, but I am roughly a 34-inch waist, and I am happy to send precise measurements once we agree on a maker. I would also appreciate a few photos of your previous belt work, especially anything involving embossed lettering or custom buckles, before we start, just so I know your stitching and tooling style will match what I have in mind.
Budget is flexible for the right craftsperson, and timeline is not urgent, but I would like to have it finished within a few weeks. I am open to a video call to discuss leather selection and thread color if that helps you plan the piece. Looking forward to seeing some portfolio samples.
