Project description
I have two indoor cats and a spare corner in my living room that I would love to turn into a proper vertical playground for them. What I am picturing is a floor-to-ceiling installation built directly into the wall - a mix of solid wood shelves at different heights, a couple of wider perches near the window where they like to sunbathe, and a built-in sisal-wrapped scratching post that connects the lower and middle sections.
The wall itself is about 8 feet wide and the ceiling height is roughly 9 feet, so there is plenty of room to work with. I am open to your suggestions on layout, but I would like at least five to seven landing platforms of varying sizes, a hidden or semi-enclosed cubby somewhere in the middle for napping, and secure anchoring since one of my cats is quite large and jumps aggressively between levels. Everything needs to hold weight safely - I do not want anything wobbling or pulling away from the drywall after a few months of daily use.
I am flexible on wood type but would prefer something that looks intentional and finished, not like a leftover plywood project - think birch plywood with a nice stain, or if budget allows, a mix of solid pine and hardwood accents. Carpeted or sisal-wrapped surfaces on the platforms would be appreciated for grip and for scratching, and I would like the scratching post itself to be a genuinely usable, replaceable sisal column rather than just a decorative piece.
I can provide photos and exact measurements of the room, including outlet and window placement, once we connect. I would like to discuss the design first with a rough sketch or 3D mockup before any cutting begins, and I am hoping to have the whole thing installed within a couple of weeks. Please share examples of similar built-in cat furniture you have completed, along with your approach to wall anchoring and weight distribution, in your proposal.
