Project description
I have a fairly deep but poorly organized linen closet in the upstairs hallway of my house, and right now it is just three flimsy wire shelves that sag under the weight of folded towels and bedding. Everything gets stacked in tall precarious piles, sheets and pillowcases end up jammed into gaps, and I can never find a matching set without pulling half the closet apart. I want to hire an experienced carpenter to rip out the old wire shelving and build a proper set of custom built-in shelves and cabinetry that actually fits the space and the way my family uses it.
The closet opening is roughly 24 inches deep and about 30 inches wide, with just over 7 feet of height to work with. I am picturing a mix of fixed and adjustable shelving: a few wider, deeper shelves near the bottom for bulky bedding like comforters and blankets, narrower shelves in the middle sized for folded towels and washcloths, and maybe a couple of shallow slide-out drawers or bins near the bottom for smaller items like extra pillowcases or first aid supplies. Solid wood or good quality plywood with a painted or stained finish that matches the existing trim in the hallway would be ideal, and I would like the shelf edges finished cleanly, not just raw plywood edges.
I am open to suggestions on the layout since a professional will know better than I do how to maximize the space and avoid it feeling cramped. I do want the shelving securely anchored to the wall studs since this closet gets used daily and I do not want anything sagging or pulling away from the wall in a year. If it makes sense, I would also consider adding a small label holder or trim strip along the shelf fronts so things stay organized long-term.
My budget is modest but I am realistic about paying fairly for quality carpentry work, and I would rather pay a bit more for something built to last than get something cheap that warps or sags. I can provide measurements and photos of the closet, and I am flexible on scheduling over the next couple of weeks.
