Project description
I'm looking for an experienced leathercrafter to build a custom roll-up tool organizer from scratch, sized and pocketed to fit my own working kit rather than a generic template. The piece needs to hold a mixed set of hand tools — several flat and Phillips screwdrivers of different lengths, two bench chisels, a marking knife, a few mechanical pencils and a small ruler — so the pocket layout has to be planned around actual tool widths and thicknesses, not guessed.
Material should be full-grain or genuine top-grain vegetable-tanned leather, roughly 2-3mm on the body panel for structure and a slightly lighter weight on the pocket strips so the roll folds without straining the stitches. I like the look of natural or medium chestnut leather that will darken and patina with handling over the years, but I'm open to a color recommendation once you know the tanning method. Edges should be beveled, burnished and slicked smooth — no raw or painted edges.
Construction: please use genuine saddle stitching with waxed linen or polyester thread, two needles pulling through the same holes, not a machine lock-stitch that can unravel. Pocket dividers should be riveted or stitched at the base with reinforced bar-tacking at stress points so repeated tool removal doesn't tear the seams over time. I'd like adjustable-width pockets on one side for the bulkier chisels and narrower fixed slots on the other for pens and screwdrivers, with a flat center pocket for a small notepad.
Closure: a roll-and-tie system — either a wrap-around leather lace with a metal D-ring or a single long strap threaded through a leather keeper, whichever you find holds tension better on a fully loaded roll. I'd also like a discreet monogram or initials, hand-tooled or debossed near the closure flap, and a maker's stamp on the reverse if that's part of your normal practice.
For timeline, I understand hand-stitched work like this typically takes one to two weeks depending on your queue, and I'm happy to review a sketch or pattern mockup before you cut leather, plus a mid-project photo update.
