Project description
I carve bookend pairs and standing book-display stands to order, one commission at a time, starting from a single billet of solid hardwood so the grain reads as one continuous piece across both ends of the set. Oak, walnut and ash are my usual choices: oak for a pale, strongly grained look that suits rustic and Scandinavian shelves, walnut for a warm dark tone that photographs well against light interiors, and ash where you want flex and shock resistance in a piece that will be picked up and moved often. Ready-planed maple or cherry blanks can be sourced on request if you have a particular wood in mind to match existing furniture.
Motifs are worked out with you before the first cut: a pair of owls facing inward, a stylised oak leaf and acorn relief, a ship's wheel, a mountain range silhouette, or a family crest reduced to clean carved lines. I keep the relief no deeper than the wood can safely carry near the base, so the carving stays crisp without weakening the L-shaped foot that actually bears the weight of the books. Every design gets a scale drawing first, then a soft-wood test carve of the trickiest section so we agree on depth and finish before I touch your final timber.
Weight and base stability are treated as engineering, not decoration: the horizontal foot is cut thick and left wide enough that a full shelf of hardcovers cannot tip the piece forward, and where a customer's collection runs heavy I add a concealed lead or steel weight let into a routed cavity in the base, sealed with a matching wood plug so nothing shows. Every base is fitted with self-adhesive felt pads on the underside to protect shelving and stop the bookend sliding when a book is pulled. A light beeswax and oil finish is hand-rubbed into the grain, giving warmth and water resistance without a plastic sheen. Personalisation is welcome at no extra step in the process: initials, a date, or a short line of text can be engraved into the base or worked discreetly into the relief itself.
