Project description
I design and build freestanding wooden gazebos from the ground up, taking a backyard corner from bare grass or a rough patch of gravel to a finished outdoor room you will actually use for years. Every project starts with a short site visit or a set of photos and measurements: I check the ground slope, drainage, sun and wind exposure, and how the structure should sit relative to the house, fence and any existing patio so it reads as part of the garden rather than an afterthought dropped into it.
Framing is built from pressure-treated pine or Douglas fir for the main posts and beams, with cedar or western red cedar as an upgrade option for anyone who wants natural rot and insect resistance plus a warmer color straight out of the box. Posts are set on poured concrete footings below the frost line, or on adjustable post bases bolted to concrete piers where a lighter footprint is preferred — I will walk you through both options and their trade-offs in cost and permanence before we pour anything.
The roof is framed hexagonal or octagonal depending on the footprint you choose, with a central ridge point, curved or straight rafters, and a finished cupola detail on request. Roofing itself can be asphalt shingles to match the house, cedar shakes, or standing-seam metal for a cleaner modern look. Flooring is built as a raised deck on joists with proper airflow underneath, using pressure-treated decking boards, composite decking, or tongue-and-groove cedar for a softer barefoot feel.
For anyone dealing with mosquitoes or pollen, I offer removable or fixed screen panels between the posts, framed in matching wood with fiberglass mesh, plus a screen door if you want the gazebo fully enclosed in the evenings. Everything gets sanded, primed and finished with an exterior-grade stain or paint in a color you choose, with two coats minimum and a final inspection walk-through before handoff.
Typical timeline runs one to two weeks depending on footprint size and whether screening is included, with most of that time spent on framing and roofing rather than finishing. I keep the site clean daily and haul away offcuts and packaging myself, so there is nothing left for you to deal with once the last coat of stain is dry.
