Project description
The subjects are already sketched out in our heads. A window with a curtain lifted by the wind, a cup and a folded newspaper on a kitchen table, a cat asleep on a radiator, a tram stop in the rain, a bunch of dried herbs hanging on a nail, and a night stairwell with one lamp burning. The drawing should stay calm and graphic: a dense black line, plenty of white space, no decorative clutter. Cut the blocks in grey or brown linoleum with proper U- and V-gouges rather than a single knife, and keep the tool marks where they look alive.
Print size is 30 by 40 cm with margins of at least 5 cm at the sides and 7 cm at the bottom, so the sheets can be matted afterwards. Paper: cotton rag or a soft printmaking stock of 250 to 300 gsm, warm white rather than bleached. Four sheets in one colour, deep black; the remaining two in two colours, black plus a muted terracotta or a dusty blue, printed from two blocks with clean registration. Edition of fifteen plus two artist proofs per subject, pulled by hand on a press or with a baren or a wooden spoon, as long as the ink lies evenly and the solids are not patchy.
What we expect to receive:
— six blocks cut and proofed, with a test pull sent to us before the edition is printed;
— fifteen numbered impressions of each subject, pencilled in the lower left, titled in the centre, signed and dated in the lower right;
— four sheets of each subject handed over to us, the rest of the edition stays with you;
— simple off-white mats cut to the sheet, and plain oak frames if you can arrange them;
— twelve days is a comfortable deadline; tell us if the two-colour sheets need longer.
