Project description
I am looking for an experienced wood carver or furniture maker who will design and manufacture a new carved wooden jewelry box as a gift. This is not a restoration of an old item, but rather the creation of a piece from scratch made from solid hardwood or carefully glued panels, so I ask that only those who make bespoke pieces respond, not those who only restore old trunks.
The casket should be about the size of a large book, with a hinged lid and a shallow top tray for rings and earrings that can be removed, opening a deeper compartment below for bracelets, brooches and chains. I would like the lid and front wall to be decorated with relief carving with a plant or floral ornament — not in a modern style, but rather in a classical one, with smooth curved lines. A small brass or bronze clasp and hinges would be useful — either the master will select them himself or advise what to buy separately.
The type of wood is open to discussion: I like walnut, cherry and oak, and I trust the craftsman to choose the one that will give the cleanest carving and best preserve the fine details of the ornament. I would like the interior lining to be felt or velvet in a calm neutral shade, and the compartments should be designed to actually hold jewellery, not just be purely decorative. On the outside, a smooth finish with oil or hand-rubbed wax is preferable to glossy varnish — this way the texture of the wood and carving will remain warm and pleasant to the touch.
Please provide examples of similar carved caskets you have already made, indicate the usual timeframe for manufacturing such a piece and explain how you usually structure the stages of work and partial payment for individual orders.
