Project description
I am renovating a wood cabin and want a real centerpiece for the dining area: a hanging light fixture carved entirely from wood, shaped to resemble a cluster of branching antlers reaching outward from a central hub. This is not a plastic or resin imitation — I want genuine hand-carved timber, with visible tool marks, natural grain, and an organic, slightly irregular silhouette that looks like it grew that way rather than being machined.
The frame should have a central ring or hub carved with texture that suggests bark or gnarled wood, from which four to six curved branches extend outward and upward, each ending in a small platform or cup that holds an electric bulb socket. I am open to either a warm incandescent-style filament bulb look or small frosted globes — whichever the design suits better once the carving is done. The piece needs to be wired properly for household electric current, with a ceiling mount plate, a braided or rustic-look cord, and all sockets rated for safe continuous use, ideally with a certification mark or at least clearly rated hardware.
Species: I am thinking oak, ash, or a dense fruitwood for durability and a rich color once oiled or waxed, but I am open to your recommendation on which wood carves well into thin curved branch shapes without cracking. Finish should be a natural oil or hard wax that deepens the grain without adding shine or plastic-looking lacquer — this fixture will hang under warm bulbs and I want the wood tone to glow rather than reflect glare.
Overall diameter should be roughly 60 to 90 centimeters (branch tip to branch tip), and it should weigh little enough to mount on a standard ceiling junction box with a proper mounting bracket, or I can arrange a reinforced mount if the design ends up heavier. Please include a supports and hardware plan up front so I can confirm the ceiling can take the load safely.
I would like to see a sketch or rough digital rendering before carving starts, then progress photos at rough-shape, detail-carving, and finishing stages. A short video of the finished fixture lit up would be very much appreciated before shipping. Packaging needs to protect the branch tips during transit — I have had breakage issues before with delicate carved pieces, so sturdy custom crating or foam bracing is important.
Please share examples of any previous carved lighting fixtures, antler-style furniture, or large sculptural woodwork so I can judge whether your carving style fits the rustic-cabin look I am after.
