Project description
I am looking for an experienced mason or landscaping contractor to build a freestanding stone fire pit for a bonfire in the backyard. This should be a self-contained structure, not a ready-made kit from a store. The area is approximately 120-130 cm in diameter, located on level lawn near the patio, about four metres from the house. I want a round or slightly hexagonal basin made of natural stone laid dry or on mortar (or a suitable facing block if natural stone turns out to be too expensive), with an internal heat-resistant lining so the structure does not crack from heat over time.
The scope of work includes: excavation and levelling the base, arranging a layer of compacted gravel and a bedding layer so the structure does not shift and is not heaved up after winter, laying the stone walls to a height of approximately 35-40 cm, installing a heat-resistant inner lining ring and finishing the top edge with a row of flat coping stones of sufficient width to place a glass or plate on. I would also like a small drainage gap or layer of gravel at the base so rainwater does not accumulate inside the bowl.
A chimney, gas connection or built-in bench around the fire pit is not needed — just the fire pit itself. But if the contractor usually offers a surrounding stone bench or gravel ring as an additional option, I would be happy to hear this as a separate line item in the estimate. Materials can be purchased by the contractor or by me — whichever is more economical locally; I am flexible about stone colour, the main thing is that it looks like natural fieldstone or warm grey-beige facing that matches the existing patio tiles.
