Project description
I am looking for an experienced ceramicist who will make on a potter's wheel a complete set of large bowls for noodle soup — for ramen, pho and similar dishes on rich broth. This is not an everyday cereal or breakfast bowl: I need real volume and depth to accommodate a generous portion of broth, noodles, filling and toppings without crowding, and high walls will keep the heat longer and prevent the broth from splashing when stirring. I would like a set of at least six bowls, each with a volume of approximately 900–1100 millilitres, and six matching ceramic spoons made from the same clay and coated with complementary glaze.

The bowls should feel substantial and stable in the hand, with a wide comfortable rim that is pleasant to bring to the mouth, and with a stable bottom that does not tip over even when nearly full. I am willing to consider either a uniform solid finish for the entire set or a small palette of two or three coordinating shades — the important thing is that the set reads as one thoughtful collection, not as disparate pieces. I ask you to avoid sharp bright primary colours; I prefer warm, earthy or deep saturated tones with a slight texture or natural unevenness to the glaze — the depth that comes from proper firing in a reducing atmosphere or layered glaze application, not a flat uniform coating.

Durability is extremely important, since the bowls will be used weekly for actual meals, so the composition of the clay and the firing temperature must ensure a fully sintered, food-safe result suitable for dishwashers and microwaves, and the glaze must be lead-free and without other unsafe additives. Please tell me about your kiln, typical firing regimen and selected clay composition before starting work. I would appreciate photographs of past work in large format, especially noodle bowls or large serving bowls, so I can assess the scale and wall thickness in your execution. A few photos of the process at the forming and trimming stage would be very helpful, and before shipping — a final check for warping, cracks and glaze drips.

Packaging is a separate important issue for items of this size and weight; please describe how you plan to individually wrap each bowl and spoon so they survive shipping intact. I am flexible about exact dimensions and finishing details and am open to your creative vision as a craftsman, but the ultimate goal is a complete, generous in volume, everyday durable set that transforms a simple bowl of noodles into a reason to sit down at the table. Please indicate approximate timelines from order to completion and let me know whether you regularly work on orders of this size or if additional time will be needed to coordinate glaze combinations.
