Project description
I am looking for a skilled carpenter or cabinet installer to design and build a custom built-in storage system for our home laundry room. The room currently has a stacked washer and dryer along one wall with bare space above and to the side that is completely wasted. I would like floor-to-ceiling cabinets built around and above the machines, a dedicated section for a built-in folding counter at a comfortable working height, and a hanging rod mounted underneath one of the upper cabinets for air-drying shirts and delicate items straight out of the dryer.
The laundry room is roughly 7 by 9 feet, with a single window and an exterior door leading to the garage. Plumbing and dryer venting are already in place and will not need to move, but I do want outlets and the vent path considered in the cabinet design so nothing gets boxed in awkwardly. Upper cabinets should hold detergent, softener, cleaning supplies and extra linens; a few should have adjustable shelving. Lower cabinets, where the layout allows, could include a pull-out hamper or laundry sorting bins.
The folding counter needs to be sturdy enough to lean on while folding towels and sheets, ideally with a durable, easy-to-wipe surface such as butcher block, quartz, or a laminate that can handle moisture. Underneath the counter I would like either open cubbies for baskets or a shallow drawer bank — open to suggestions on what works best given the space.
I am hoping for a clean, cohesive look that matches the rest of our home's trim and cabinetry style (simple shaker doors, painted white or a soft gray). The freelancer should be comfortable working around existing appliances, provide a materials list and rough timeline, and ideally share photos of similar laundry room built-ins they have completed. Local candidates who can do an in-person walkthrough before quoting are preferred, but I am open to a detailed remote consultation with measurements and photos if that is not possible.
