Project description
I am looking for a skilled wood carver to create a custom hand-carved sign with lettering cut directly into the wood — not painted, not printed, not a vinyl overlay, but genuine carved relief or incised lettering that you can see and feel in the surface. This will be a welcome sign for a home entrance or a small business, and I want the letters to have real depth and craftsmanship, the kind of piece that looks handmade because it is.
I have a rough idea of what I want but I am open to your recommendations on wood species. I am considering cedar, oak, walnut, or basswood, and would like your input on which one holds fine detail best and stands up to outdoor weather if the sign will hang outside. The sign should be roughly 18 to 30 inches wide, with either raised (relief) letters standing proud of a recessed background, or incised letters carved into a flat panel — I would like to see a couple of style options before committing to one.
Lettering style matters a lot to me: I am drawn to a rustic serif or a hand-lettered script look, but I am happy to discuss options that suit the wood grain and whatever carving technique you use best. Please send a design mockup or sketch before you start cutting, so we can agree on layout, spacing, and font before any wood is touched. This is meant to look carved, not decorated, so it should not be confused with a painted address plaque — I specifically want the letters cut into the wood.
Finish should protect the piece for years: an exterior-grade sealant or oil finish if it will live outdoors, plus optional accent staining or light gilding on the letters to make them stand out against the background. I would love to see photos of similar carved sign work you have already completed, ideally comparable in size and lettering style, so I can be confident in your process before we start.
Please share your estimated timeline, the wood you recommend, and how you typically handle revisions to the design before final carving begins. Clear communication throughout matters to me, and I would like at least one progress photo before the piece is finished and shipped.
