Project description
My backyard has a noticeable slope along the rear property line, and every heavy rain washes soil down toward the fence, leaving bare patches and a small gully near the corner. I want to fix this properly, not with another round of mulch that gets carried away by the next storm. I am looking for a mason or landscaper with real retaining wall experience to design and build a structural wall that holds the slope back for good and gives me a flat, usable terrace above it.
The section that needs support runs roughly 28 to 32 feet along the back of the yard, with a height that varies from about 2 feet at one end to close to 4 feet at the other. I am open to either interlocking concrete block (segmental retaining wall units) or natural stone — whichever you think will hold up best for this height and soil type and fit the budget. I do care about how it looks, since the wall will be visible from the patio, so a clean, even coursing and a color that works with a light gray house are important to me.
Beyond just stacking blocks, I need the job done to code: proper excavation, a compacted gravel base, geogrid reinforcement at the taller sections if the engineering calls for it, and drainage — perforated pipe behind the wall tied into gravel backfill so water does not build up and push the wall out over time. I have seen a neighbor's wall bulge and eventually fail because nobody put in drainage, and I do not want to repeat that mistake. If the height requires a permit or an engineer's stamp in this area, please factor that into your estimate and process, and let me know what you need from me to get it approved.
I would like the finished top of the wall to be level enough to eventually set a small paver patio and a couple of raised garden beds behind it, so precision on the top course matters. A simple cap block finish is fine, nothing fancy, but it should look intentional and be safe to walk near without an edge crumbling.
