Project description
I own a detached garage for two cars and a small work bench area, roughly 38 square metres inside the walls. The old screed was thin, laid straight on soil years ago, and it has cracked into plates that rock under the wheels and shed dust constantly. I have already broken it out and carted the rubble away, so you will arrive to bare subgrade. What I want is a proper slab this time: compacted base, reinforcement, correct thickness for a car, a hardened top layer that will not powder, and joints cut and sealed so the cracking happens where we decide and not across the middle of the floor.

My expectation is a crushed stone base of 150 to 200 mm placed in two lifts and compacted with a plate compactor, levelled to a tolerance you can actually work from, then polythene over it. Slab thickness 120 mm minimum since a loaded pickup stands on it in winter, reinforced with a welded mesh on chairs in the upper third, or with steel fibre in the mix if you argue that is better for this job — tell me which you prefer and why, I am open to either. Concrete C25/30 or stronger, delivered by mixer, pumped or barrowed in, your call on access. Please set a fall of about 1 to 1.5 per cent towards the doors so wash water and snow melt run out instead of standing near the far wall.

The surface is the part I care about most. Once the slab has taken its initial set and holds a footprint, a dry-shake corundum hardener is to be broadcast in two passes and power-trowelled in, finishing to a closed, matt surface rather than a mirror gloss — I do not want a skating rink when the tyres bring in snow. After curing, a penetrating sealer to stop dusting. Then saw the joints within the first day or so, in panels of around three by three metres plus a joint along the door line and around the columns, clean them out and seal with a polyurethane sealant.

Please quote materials and labour separately, and tell me realistically when I can walk on it, when I can drive the car in, and how long before I should keep heavy loads off it. Site has 380 V power, water and a gate wide enough for a mixer truck to reach within about eight metres of the opening. I can be on site each day to open up and check progress.
