Project description
We own a house just outside town and we want to turn part of the front lawn into a parking area for two cars, together with the short approach from the gate. The pad itself is roughly six by five metres, and the approach adds about four more metres, so call it a little over forty square metres in total. Asphalt or a concrete slab are out of the question for us: the view from the windows matters, the whole street keeps its frontage green, and water running off a sealed surface would end up against the foundation. What we want is a reinforced grass surface — cellular grid modules filled with soil and sown with grass, so the wheels stand on something firm while the eye still sees a lawn.
We are asking for the full job, not for modules dropped on top of the existing turf. That means marking out, excavating the ground to whatever depth the build-up needs, carting the spoil away, compacting the bottom of the trough, then a crushed stone base laid and compacted in layers with a plate compactor, a separating geotextile so the base does not silt up into the clay below, and a levelling bedding layer under the grid. The modules themselves have to be locked together properly and cut neatly where the pad meets the kerb, the gate posts and the curved edge by the hedge, not snapped apart by hand.
After that comes filling the cells with a fertile mix level with the ribs, rolling it, and sowing a hard-wearing seed blend that tolerates being driven on and parked on. We would like the finished surface set slightly below the edge of the surrounding lawn, with a fall of about two centimetres per metre away from the house towards the ditch, so rain and snowmelt drain off on their own and never stand in the cells.
