Handmade scented sachets and herb bags for wardrobes

I make scented sachets the slow way, one bag at a time. The fabric decides almost everything, so I start there: dense cotton, linen with a tight weave, or fine cotton batiste doubled up. Loose gauzy cloth looks charming on a photo and then spills crumbs of herb across your folded shirts, so I avoid it. Seams go double, the opening is closed with a small hidden stitch or a drawstring you can actually untie, and every bag gets an inner liner of thin calico when the filling is finely crushed. That liner is the difference between a sachet that lives for a year and one that leaves dust on a dark sweater after a week.

The filling is built from four familiar things: lavender for the calm floral base, mint for a cool top note, dried citrus peel for brightness, and pine or fir needles for the dry resinous background. I blend them by nose rather than by a fixed recipe, and I can lean the mix towards whatever you like - sharper citrus, softer lavender, a quieter herbal note for a shelf of shirts. Essential oil never goes onto the fabric itself: an oiled cloth stains what it touches. Instead a small unfinished wooden bead or disc sits inside the bag and takes two or three drops, holding them and releasing them slowly. When the scent fades, you crush the sachet in your hand for a few seconds and the herbs wake up again; when crushing stops helping, usually after eight to twelve months, the wooden bead can be re-dosed or the filling replaced.

Sizes follow the furniture, not the other way round. Flat rectangles lie under linen in a drawer, small squares sit between folded knitwear, and long narrow bags with a loop or a ribbon hang from a hanger next to a coat. Names, initials or a short date can be embroidered by hand, which makes a set of three or five bags a very easy gift with a box and a card. Please read this part carefully: dried herbs and essential oils can cause an allergic reaction or irritation in sensitive people, and a sachet is a scented object for a wardrobe, not a remedy and not a guaranteed protection against moths. Never place a sachet in a baby's cot, a crib or a playpen, and keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
