Project description
I need a qualified concrete contractor to build a brand-new set of poured concrete exterior steps connecting my back deck to the garden path. The existing wooden stairs have rotted and I want a permanent, code-compliant replacement.
The scope starts with layout and rise/run calculation: risers should land between 6.5 and 7.5 inches with a consistent tread depth of at least 11 inches, verified against local building code before any excavation begins. After excavating and compacting a gravel base, plywood and 2x lumber forms need to be built for each riser and tread, braced securely so the forms hold their shape under the weight of wet concrete.
Once forms are set, a rebar reinforcement grid (rebar tied at each intersection, with proper clearance from the edges) should be placed through the whole run of steps, tied into the existing footing or a new footing poured below frost depth. Anchor bolts or embedded post bases for a handrail must be positioned and set into the top step and landing before the pour, spaced to match code-required handrail height and baluster spacing.
The concrete should be poured in one continuous session per flight, consolidated to remove air pockets, then screeded level and finished with a broom finish across each tread for slip resistance — no smooth trowel finish on the walking surface. Edges get a proper edging tool pass, and control joints should be considered at the sides.
After finishing, the steps need to be covered and kept moist for proper curing (at least 5-7 days before foot traffic, longer before heavy use), with forms stripped once the concrete has enough strength.
