I offer a dedicated lathe-turning and carving service for pet memorial urns, built one at a time for a family saying goodbye to a companion animal. Every commission starts with a short conversation about the pet — size of remains to be held, preferred wood tone, and whether the piece will sit on a shelf, mantel, or be buried in a garden. From there I select stock myself rather than letting a client guess at species: dense walnut or cherry for a rich, dark result that hides handling marks over the years, or maple and ash when a lighter, warmer tone is wanted. Each blank is checked for internal stress and moisture content before it ever touches the lathe, because a rushed blank is where cracked lids and warped seams come from months later.
The urn body is roughed on the lathe first, then the lid is turned as a separate, matched piece so the fit stays snug without glue or hardware — a small brass pin locates it so it seats the same way every time it's opened. Interior work is where most of my hours go: the cavity is bored to the exact volume requested, then lined with a food-safe sealed finish so no dust or resin ever migrates through the grain. Once the shape is settled I move to hand carving for the details a lathe can't produce — a paw print relief on the lid, a collar-and-tag motif around the rim, or a simple raised border, whichever suits the piece.
A nameplate is included on every order: hand-engraved lettering with the pet's name and dates, set into a recess so it never catches or peels. The exterior finish is a gentle hand-rubbed oil-and-wax build, applied in thin coats and buffed between each one, which protects the wood without a glossy plastic look that would feel wrong on a memorial piece. I photograph the urn at each stage and send progress images before final assembly, so the family can request small adjustments — a deeper carving, a different oil sheen — before anything is sealed. Typical turnaround is one to two weeks depending on wood availability and the complexity of the carving requested.
