Project description
I have inherited a carved wooden cuckoo clock — the traditional weight-driven kind, with two pinecone-shaped weights on chains, a swinging pendulum, and the little door where the wooden bird pops out on the hour. It used to keep good time and the cuckoo call sounded clear, but after years in storage the whole thing has gone quiet and unreliable. I am looking for someone experienced with this specific type of mechanism, not a general wall-clock repair.

What needs attention, as far as I can tell:

1. The movement itself — the brass plates, wheels, and the escapement that drives the pendulum — is dry and gummed up with old oil that has turned to varnish. It needs to be fully disassembled, cleaned in an ultrasonic bath or equivalent, inspected for worn pivots and bent teeth, and reassembled with fresh clock oil in the correct viscosity for each bearing.

2. The bellows that produce the cuckoo call have gone silent on one side — I think the leather has cracked or the internal pleats have collapsed, because only one note plays instead of the usual two-tone call. Both bellows may need new leather or a full rebuild, and the little wooden hammers that strike them need to be checked for wear and correct positioning.

3. The automation linkage — the cam, levers, and wires that open the door, push the bird forward, work its wings and beak, and pull it back in — is out of sync with the striking train. The door sometimes opens without the bird appearing, or the bird stays out too long. This whole sequence needs to be retimed against the count wheel or rack-and-snail striking mechanism.

4. The carved wooden case has some chipped leaves and a loose chimney ornament on top, plus general dust and grime in the carving. I would like this cleaned and stabilized, with any small losses filled and toned to match, without over-restoring the original finish.

5. Once everything is reassembled, the chains need to run true without binding, the pendulum needs calibrating for accurate timekeeping, and the cuckoo call needs to trigger reliably on every hour and half-hour for at least a week of test running before I consider the job complete.
