Custom Handmade Ceramic Spice Jars
Service description
I make sets of small spice jars on a pottery wheel that look like a unified collection rather than a random assortment of mismatched pots. Each jar is thrown, trimmed, and given its own lid, then the entire set is fired together so that the size, wall thickness, and glaze color match from jar to jar.
We choose the clay together: warm textured grog-clay with speckles, smooth beige earthenware, or white porcelain-like clay — each behaves differently under glaze, and I'll explain the differences in advance. Available glazes include matte white, calm oatmeal, blue-grey slate, and more complex options like reactive dark tenmoku or glossy celadon. I can match the color to a photo of your tile or countertop.
The number of jars in the set is flexible: 6 jars are enough for a compact everyday stand, 8 will cover a wider range of spices, and 12 allow you to display spices and dried herbs separately. The standard volume of one jar is 100–170 ml, and if desired, some jars can be made larger for spices you use more frequently. Each lid is individually ground to fit its own jar after the first firing: it sits snugly, doesn't let moisture through, and doesn't rattle, but comes off easily with a dry hand.
If desired, I add a decorative handle on the lid, carved or stamped patterns (wheat, herb sprigs, initials), as well as labels for specific spices rather than an abstract "spice set." The interior surface is always covered with food-safe glaze, regardless of the exterior decoration.
Each jar is individually wrapped in bubble wrap, the set is secured in the box with rigid dividers, and shipping includes full insurance. The production time from order confirmation to shipment is usually 10–14 days depending on the current queue and firing schedule; if needed, we can discuss expedited options before finalizing the order.
