I make decorative garden mushrooms from ceramic, hand-thrown on a potter's wheel. These are sculptural figurines that bring garden beds, pathways, tree trunk circles, and porch corners to life. Each mushroom is formed from two parts — a rounded cap and a sturdy stem, which I join and refine by hand, so the curve, tilt, and character of each piece is unique. It's precisely this organic imperfection that makes the set feel like a genuine forest find rather than a stamped souvenir.
Usually customers order a set of three to seven mushrooms of varying heights, placed in a cluster like a small mushroom glade, but I'm happy to create a single large accent mushroom or a larger composition for a spacious flower bed. The caps can be finished with solid smooth glaze, speckled coating, or two-tone glaze with a "drip" effect that naturally runs down toward the stem. The palette ranges from cream and mossy green to terracotta and deep cobalt blue. Surface texture is also customizable: some prefer a matte, slightly aged look that blends with greenery, others want gloss that catches the sun and enlivens the flower bed edge.
Each piece undergoes bisque firing, glazing, and a second firing to stoneware temperature — this makes the mushrooms frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use through most seasons, though I recommend bringing them under cover during severe frosts. I leave the stem base unglazed and slightly rough so the figurine can be easily buried in soil or mulch without risk of slipping, and for tall mushrooms I create a widened weighted base for stability in wind and rain.
Work begins with a brief discussion about the location where the mushrooms will stand: sun or shade, what plants are nearby, whether you want a realistic fly agaric or a more whimsical stylized silhouette. I make a quick sketch and show glaze samples before I sit down at the wheel, then send you photos at the unfired stage, after bisque firing, and after glazing — you can request changes before the final firing.
