Service description
I perform full-service installation of external lightning protection for private homes: lightning arresters (lightning rods) are installed along the ridge, gable ends, and high points of the roof, and downconduct leads connect them to a grounding loop laid around the perimeter of the property. This is a purely mechanical, passive system — it gives a direct lightning strike a pre-arranged low-resistance path into the ground, diverting the discharge away from the roof, chimney, antenna mast, and house walls.
I want to clarify to avoid confusion with another service: this is not a surge protection device in the electrical panel and not a module inserted into the breaker box against voltage spikes from the power supply. Lightning protection and grounding have nothing to do with the house's internal wiring — it's a separate structure of rods, cables, and ground electrodes on the roof and around the foundation that intercepts a direct lightning strike to the building, not power line surges.
The work includes an on-site visit to measure the roof, assess height, surrounding trees and structures, and calculate the protection zone using the rolling sphere method, select the height and placement of lightning arresters, run downconduct leads made of copper or aluminum along the least visible roof path, and install the grounding electrode — vertical electrodes, a closed loop, or a horizontal electrode depending on soil composition. All connections are made by crimping or exothermic welding, not simple twisting, because a loose contact is the most common cause of system failure precisely at the moment of a strike.
After installation I test the integrity of the chain and measure grounding resistance with a certified instrument, record the value in ohms, photograph each connection and electrode before the trench is backfilled, and give the customer a brief written report — useful for the insurance company and for future maintenance. I also offer annual inspection: tightening clamps, checking for corrosion, and remeasuring resistance, because soil conditions change seasonally and a system showing good results two years ago can imperceptibly drift beyond safe limits.
