Project description
We finished the hard landscaping in our garden last autumn and now every edge is falling apart. Gravel from the paths migrates into the lawn, bark mulch washes out of the beds after each heavy rain, and the line between grass and planting has lost any shape at all. I am looking for a contractor to set a proper concrete edging line around the whole layout and to do it once, properly, so that it still looks straight in five years.

The total run is about sixty-two metres. Forty-one of those are two straight paths that meet at the terrace, the rest wraps three flower beds, and one of the beds is a full circle roughly two and a half metres across. Counting everything there are eleven turns: four of them close to a right angle, the remaining seven are soft curves that have to be cut and closed up neatly, not faked with wide wedges of mortar. I have the drawing with dimensions and I can peg out the shapes with you on site before anything is dug.

What I expect from the work itself is ordinary good practice, but I want it written into the offer. A string line and a level on every straight section, a trench of consistent depth, a compacted crushed stone bed at the bottom rather than soil, units bedded on mortar and locked with a concrete haunch on both sides so nothing tips out after the first winter. The edging should stand about four centimetres above the path and sit flush with the soil on the bed side. Joints even, with a small gap left for temperature movement instead of everything butted tight.

Please include in your price:

— pegging out, string lines and checking levels against the terrace;
— excavation of the trench and removal of the spoil from the site;
— crushed stone bed, compaction, mortar bedding and the concrete haunch on both sides;
— cutting units for the radii and for the four corners;
— backfilling, reinstating the turf along the whole run and washing the paths down at the end.

Tell me how many days you need, how many people will be on site, whose mixer and cutter we are using, and what you guarantee if a section settles. Work can start any weekday, water and power are available in the garden.
