Project description
Our bathroom is 1.7 by 2.1 m with a ceiling at 2.55 m, and the old floor-standing toilet and pedestal basin have to go. I want everything hanging off the wall so the floor stays clear and washing it stops being a fight with a pedestal. The wall behind the future toilet is a hollow partition, not load-bearing, so the frame will have to sit on the floor with its own feet and be braced back to the partition studs rather than anchored into brick. The wall behind the basin is solid, so there the bracket can go straight into it. I am 1.82 m tall and my wife is 1.63, so I would like to agree the finished rim height together on site before anything is fixed: my rough idea is 43 cm to the toilet seat and around 85 cm to the basin rim, but I would rather hear what you think.
The key point for me is that nothing is visible afterwards. The basin gets a concealed bottle trap with the outlet and both supply lines buried in the wall, and the mixer is wall-mounted, so the concealed body needs to be set at the right depth for the finish we are using - 10 mm porcelain tile on adhesive over the boarding. If the depth is guessed wrong, either the spout sits too tight to the wall or the escutcheons float off it, and both look wrong. The waste run to the existing stack is about 1.3 m and the fall has to be kept honest across that distance, not just eyeballed, because a lazy gradient on a hidden pipe is something we will only find out about in a year.
Before anything is boarded over I want the whole assembly pressure-tested and left standing overnight, with the joints dry in the morning and me looking at them. Only then do we close it up: moisture-resistant board, a proper access hatch in front of the flush plate and cistern, and a second small hatch at the trap if you think it is needed. Old toilet, basin, pedestal and packaging are to be taken away, not left on the landing. Please quote with materials separate from labour and tell me realistically how many working days this takes - we have one bathroom and a family, so I need to plan around the days it is out of use.
