Project description
We have accumulated a sizeable dataset of geolocated records over the past few years and, frankly, we no longer have a comfortable way to look at it. The information lives in spreadsheets and a database, and staring at rows of coordinates tells us nothing. What we require is a web-based GIS application that turns those points into an interactive map we can actually explore. The map should be the heart of the product: users open the page, see all of our objects positioned correctly, and can pan, zoom, and click through to the underlying details. We are open to either Leaflet or Mapbox as the rendering engine, and we trust you to recommend which fits our volume and budget best. The important thing is that the experience feels smooth even when many thousands of markers are on screen at once.
Beyond simply displaying dots, we need the map to be a genuine analytical tool. Points that sit close together must collapse into clusters that expand as you zoom in, otherwise dense areas become an unreadable blob. We want several toggleable layers so that different categories of data can be shown or hidden independently, along with custom marker icons that reflect the type or status of each object. A filter panel is essential: users should narrow the visible set by category, date range, numeric value, or text search, and the map must react instantly. We would also like drawing tools so that a person can sketch a polygon or radius directly on the map and receive back every record that falls inside that area. Popups and side panels should present the full attributes of any selected object in a clean, readable format.
On the technical side, the data will come from our backend through an API, so the front end must load it efficiently, ideally on demand as the viewport changes rather than all at once. Geospatial queries such as "what is within this shape" or "what is nearest to this point" should be handled correctly. The interface has to be responsive and work well on tablets in the field, not only on desktops. Please treat performance, clean code, and clear documentation as part of the deliverable, and include a short handover so our own team can add new layers later without calling you for every change.
