Video Streaming Engineering — VOD & Live at Scale
Service description
I design and build video streaming platforms that stay fast and reliable when your audience grows from hundreds to millions. My core work is the full delivery chain: I set up FFmpeg transcoding pipelines that turn any source file or live feed into clean adaptive renditions, package them into HLS and DASH, and wire them to a CDN so viewers everywhere get smooth playback without buffering. Whether you need video on demand, 24/7 live channels, or low-latency event streaming, I choose the right ladder of bitrates and codecs (H.264, HEVC, AV1) so quality and cost both stay under control.
Beyond the pipeline I take care of the parts that make a real product. I integrate web and mobile players with adaptive bitrate switching, captions, thumbnails and resume-from-position, and I add the business layer you actually monetize with: DRM (Widevine, PlayReady, FairPlay), signed URLs, geo and domain restrictions, paywalls and subscription gating. On top of that I connect playback analytics so you can see concurrent viewers, rebuffering, startup time and completion rate, and turn those numbers into decisions about encoding and CDN spend.
I care about the operational side just as much as the demo. I containerize the encoders, set up autoscaling for live and batch jobs, add retry and failover so a dropped ingest does not take a channel down, and document everything so your team can run it without me. You get a system that is measured, cost-aware and built to survive traffic spikes — not a fragile prototype. Typical engagements include:
— FFmpeg VOD transcoding pipeline with adaptive HLS/DASH packaging
— Low-latency live ingest, transcoding and channel management
— Player integration with DRM, paywall and subscription control
— CDN setup, signed URLs and multi-region delivery tuning
— Playback analytics, QoS dashboards and cost optimization
