Project description

I am looking for an experienced instrument restorer to bring a family heirloom weather station back to full working order. The piece is a wall-mounted antique barometer with an attached thermometer and hygrometer dial, housed in a carved wooden case that has darkened with age and lost some of its original finish. The main issue is that the needle no longer responds correctly to pressure changes, and I suspect the internal mechanism — whether it is a sealed mercury tube or an aneroid capsule — needs to be inspected, cleaned, and recalibrated against a known reference. If the instrument turns out to be a mercury type, I understand the glass tube may need careful re-silvering or replacement, and any old mercury must be handled and disposed of according to proper safety procedures; please describe your approach to this before starting. The wooden case also needs attention: there are a few hairline cracks in the veneer, one hinge is loose, and the brass bezel around the dial has heavy tarnish and a couple of small dents. I would like the wood cleaned, minor cracks stabilized, and the original finish either restored or carefully reproduced so the case keeps its aged character rather than looking freshly refinished. The dial face itself has some foxing and faded lettering that should be cleaned or conservatively retouched without erasing the original printing style or the maker's markings. Please include in your proposal: your experience with historical barometers or similar precision dial instruments, the tools and calibration references you use, an estimate of how many hours the mechanical and cosmetic work will take separately, and photos of comparable pieces you have restored. I would also appreciate a short written report at the end explaining what was done, what parts were replaced versus preserved, and how to care for the instrument going forward so it keeps accurate readings for years. Packing and safe return shipping should be included in your quote, along with insurance appropriate to the value of an antique instrument. Please note any additional costs upfront — I prefer a clear itemized quote rather than a single lump figure. Turnaround time matters somewhat, but quality and accuracy of the final calibration are the priority, so take the time you need to do this properly.

How to write a response that gets picked

  • Open with the client’s task, not with a story about yourself.
  • Link one or two similar works from your portfolio.
  • Name a price and a deadline — and what exactly they include.
  • Ask one clarifying question: it starts the conversation.
