About the service

I make custom insoles at my own bench, and the first thing to say is what this work is not. I am a maker, not a clinician. I do not diagnose, I do not treat, and nothing written here is medical advice. The diagnosis and the prescription belong to your doctor; my part begins after that sheet is written. I make no promises that flat feet, back pain or a heel spur will go away, because that is not mine to promise. I build the device that was ordered, in the shape and the stiffness that were ordered. If you have pain, numbness, a recent injury, diabetes or any break in the skin of the foot, see the doctor first — an insole is not an answer to any of that.

Bring three things to the first visit: the prescription, the shoes you actually intend to wear the insoles in, and the socks you wear with them. The shoes matter more than people expect. A low court shoe, a work boot and a running trainer have different depths and different removable liners, and a blank that sits perfectly in one of them simply will not let the other close. The impression itself is quick: either you step into a foam box in the position your doctor specified and I keep that cast, or I scan the foot and keep the file. From the impression I choose a blank, warm it, form it over the cast and add the wedges and reliefs written on the sheet.

Materials are chosen by your weight, by the shoe and by what the prescription asks for. Soft foam cushions and feels friendly from the first step, but it compresses within months; a firmer grade holds a correction far longer and asks for more patience at the start; a rigid shell under a soft top cover lasts longest and usually needs only the cover renewed rather than the whole pair remade. When the pair is formed I fit it into your shoe in front of you, pull out the original liner, trim to its outline and check that the heel still seats properly. Then you walk in it.

What the work includes:

— a foam-box cast or a foot scan, taken in the position your doctor specified;
— reading the prescription and building exactly the corrections written on it, nothing added of my own;
— forming the blank over the cast, with a rigid or semi-rigid core where it is called for;
— several densities of material, chosen for your weight and your footwear;
— fitting into the shoes you bring, trimmed to the outline of the removable liner;
— a second pair for another type of shoe taken from the same cast;
— free adjustment of edges and top cover during the wearing-in weeks;
— usual turnaround five to ten working days, longer for a rigid build;
— wearing in an hour or two on the first day, more each day, two weeks to a month in total;
— service life around a year of daily adult wear, less for a growing child or heavy work;
— go back to your doctor if pain appears or worsens, if the foot goes numb, if skin rubs or reddens, or before ordering a remake.
