About the service
I offer a service of mobile aerial survey of forest and afforested plots by drone to assess standing timber stock. I use a light multirotor aircraft with a high-resolution camera and, if necessary, a multispectral sensor: the flight is performed along a pre-calculated route grid with dense frame overlap so the forest canopy is captured from multiple angles. The obtained images are used to build an orthophotoplan and a digital model of canopy heights, based on which estimated tree count, average and dominant canopy height, crown diameter distribution, stand density, and timber structure by zones are determined.
These indicators are compared with standard growth and volume tables (or tables provided by the client), which allows obtaining an estimate of timber volume per hectare broken down by compartments, if boundaries are marked or provided in advance. The service is designed for private forest plot owners, small forestry enterprises, land appraisers, and timber merchants who need a quick and non-invasive timber stock assessment before conducting a full ground survey.
Unlike sample surveys on test plots, aerial survey covers the entire plot, not individual points, and allows detecting drying areas, windfall, pest damage, or uneven density that can easily be missed during ground inspection. Obtained materials can be reviewed season by season, tracking growth or damage. Flights are planned considering canopy density, terrain, and local airspace regulations, and battery changes are budgeted in advance to cover a large plot in a single working day.
The results package typically includes a georeferenced orthophotoplan, canopy height model, estimated timber volume table by compartments, marked map of problem areas, and original images for the client's archive. I'm ready to discuss plot area, stand type, terrain accessibility, and report format before planning the flight, and for regular clients, repeat surveys for growth monitoring are available on favorable terms.
