Opera Software – a Norwegian company – held a so far unofficial presentation of a new mobile browser for iPad tablets. The code name of this browser is Opera Ice. A feature of this innovation is that the developers abandoned the Presto browser "engine" and adopted the open WebKit technology. The same technology is the basis for such competing browsers as Safari and Chrome. As one would expect from a tablet browser, the navigation of the Opera Ice package is built entirely on gesture commands.
It was Opera browsers that were among the first, even back in the pre-touchscreen era, to offer such techniques to users. Gesture control has long been a strong point of the Opera browser. While demonstrating Opera Ice on the iPad tablet, the developers showed how to use a "swipe" gesture to view the browsing history. With the same gesture you can flip through pages found by a query. The technical features of the new browser deserve a closer look. Abandoning the proprietary Presto technology and switching to the open WebKit platform was an unexpected decision.
